Greenland Kayak Expedition Day 5 – 26 July

Another good night’s sleep all snuggled in my fleecy PJ bottoms, silk liner and sleeping bag. It was nice to have plenty of time to rest. My wrist is now making a grim crackling noise when I move it, definitely tendonitis. I’ve strapped it up to partially immobilise it. I had some lovely porridge with seeds and granola for breakfast today and a huge mug of coffee then packed for the hike to the ice sheet.

Layers was the name of the game with regards to clothing but it was important not to wear too much for the 5km hike to the glacier as we had to go up and over a few hills to reach the ice. The hike was great, really enjoyable. The temperature gradually decreased as we approached the ice and we stopped a few times to add layers.

When we reached the ice, we stopped to put on crampons and helmets and then Ruben took us out onto the ice. It was absolutely great, I loved every minute of it. The landscape was so varied, with rivers, turquoise pools, dunes and cracks.

I was super happy with my outfit choice and felt like an Alpkit model with my Fantom belay jacket, Nautilus Waterproof trousers and Haline waterproof gloves.

The return journey to the camp was also wonderful except for the mosquitoes (although the level of mosquitoes was genuinely VERY low compared to early July). My mosquito headnet was absolutely useless for hiking in because the sun glare made it absolutely impossible to see where I needed to put my feet!

We had a really cool slab to climb up and over and then went for a swim in the red lake before heading back to camp. During dinner, Ruben got a message about an incoming storm and so we had to rethink the plan for the last couple of days to make sure we were in a position to get to the airport for our flight.
